Last week we shared tips or must-sees for when you are in Aruba, Bonaire or Curacao. This time we recommend places in Saba, Sint Maarten and Statia. A list of fun activities and projects from our firm to visit here!
Visit a local market in Sint-Maarten, discover the Saban architecture during a nice walk or dive into the history of the Dutch army on Statia.
Sint Maarten – public square Philipsburg
Most visitors to Sint Maarten visit the Dutch capital Philipsburg. In 1995 Lyongo designed the market square, which you can see in the first picture. But that design can no longer be seen. It was demolished in 2001. But you can still stroll along the market stalls and enjoy the local culture.

Fire Station - Saba
When you land on Saba, your eye will immediately be drawn to the red building next to the airport. This is the Fire Station, for which we made the design. This building is made entirely of stones that were harvested during the excavation for the project. A method that has been used on Saba for centuries and which you will see in other buildings on the island.

Fort Oranje - Statia
A major attraction in Sint Eustatius is Fort Oranje. A fort built on the cliff face of Oranjestad, the capital of the island. It is one of the most important and best preserved of the sixteen remaining defense works on the island. The fort was built by the Dutch in the 17th century. Until 1846 it served as a garrison for army infantry and artillery. After being empty, the fortress was renovated and set up as an administrative center to house the governor’s office, government services and the prison.
Lyongo made the reconstruction drawings for the old post office and later tourist office and designed the toilet building in the fort. Unfortunately the tourist office needs restoration again, but the toilet building still stands tall.

Captain Quarters - Saba
A project that is still under construction but is already worth seeing! This historic building is being transformed into a residential home. This is a reconstruction of a building that is important to the local community. The classic Saban architecture – with the white facades and red roofs – is directly recognizable in this project. After your visit, take a walk through the rest of this neighborhood; there is much to see and discover among all the greenery.

Middle Region - Sint Maarten
Six years ago, we designed a new school building for the Sister Marie Laurence School in Sint Maarten, after the previous building was destroyed by a hurricane. The building is not there yet, but a public square and playing field have already been developed next to the school – that can be used by the neighborhood. In this way, the school hopes to already work on community building and improve the neighborhood. Next to the fields is the old school, this building will be demolished, and the new one will be built here.
