We are pleased to announce the St. Maarten premiere of our documentary Kombiná. This special event will take place on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 8:00 PM at Caribbean Cinemas.
The documentary highlights St. Maarten’s diverse architectural landscape, showcasing projects that span education, community, and professional spaces. From the vibrant streets of Philipsburg to a dilapidated school in Middle Region, the film captures the impact of design on the island’s daily life. Through conversations with teachers and students at the Sister Marie Laurence School and clients of projects like the Dental Clinic Halley, the documentary illustrates how architecture shapes spaces for learning, working, and community building on St. Maarten.
About Kombiná
The documentary features the visionary work of architect Lyongo Juliana, reflecting on 25 years of architectural innovation across the Dutch Caribbean. Showcasing projects on the Windward Islands, as well as Bonaire and Curacao, the film explores what defines contemporary Caribbean architecture and its response to the region’s unique challenges. On the Windward Islands, where hurricanes are a constant threat, the focus is on creating hurricane-proof designs that combine resilience with cultural and environmental sensitivity. Insights from local designers, residents, and students add depth, offering a thought-provoking perspective on how architecture shapes and reflects the Caribbean identity.
Other premieres
Before the premiere in St. Maarten we will also host smaller premiere on Saba (February 5). Earlier premieres include Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Bonaire and Curacao. This is the final premiere for Kombiná, after the event we will submit the documentary for film festivals throughout the year. Check our website for updates on future screenings.
