Last week Lyongo Juliana spoke about inclusive design at Het Theater in Blaricum, as part of the farewell of Louis Jansen (Theater Advies). In his presentation ‘Beyond your blind spot’ he takes the audience to the current formation of the Dutch population. The demographic data shows that we are far from designing based on reality.
In 2022, 26% of the Dutch population had a migration background. That is 4 million Dutch people. In Amsterdam, our capital, even 56% have a migration background. By 2050, 30-40% of the Dutch population will have a migration background. That will then be between 5 and 8 million Dutch people out of a population of between 17.1 and 21.6 million. So are we really designing for the right demographic?
