The nominees for the Rotterdam Architecture Prize 2023 have been announced. It awards the best new buildings in the city with a prize for the team of designer, client and builder. Lyongo Juliana is on the jury for the Rotterdam Architecture Prize this year. Lyongo: ‘I think that as an architect you have a social responsibility. With high-quality urban planning and architecture, I want to come up with solutions for social issues.’

The professional jury led by architect Ninke Happel has selected 10 projects that are eligible for the prize. This time, 38 projects were submitted for the annually awarded prize, according to AIR Rotterdam. As with other editions, the share of residential projects is high among the entries. “There is a lot of variation: from residential areas, residential towers, collective and private housing projects to renovations of existing residential areas. In addition, many buildings with social functions were submitted, such as schools, sports buildings and a park,” AIR said.

The nominations are:

  • Getijdenpark Eiland van Brienenoord – gemeente Rotterdam
  • Rotterdam Rooftop Walk – Rotterdamse Dakendagen, MVRDV, LOLA Landscape
  • Zuider Gymnasium – Molenaar & Co architecten
  • The Hudsons – Orange Architects
  • Langeveld Building – Paul de Ruiter Architects
  • Gouverneblok – DaF-architecten / Ben Hoek (oorspronkelijke architect)
  • Fridtjof Nansenschool – BDG Architecten
  • Woningen Parkbuurt – RoosRos Architecten, ECHO Urban Design

In its selection, the jury for the Rotterdam Architecture Prize paid particular attention to the contribution that the buildings make to the city. Do they give something back that supports Rotterdam in its development into an accessible and inclusive, healthy and climate-neutral place? The professional jury will select a winner and two honorable mentions. In addition to the jury prize, there is also a public prize. Both will be awarded on Wednesday 7 June during the Rotterdam Architecture Month.
