Celebrating 25 years: Villa Hulshorst

On the sandy soils at the edge of the forest of the Veluwe in the Netherlands, stands Villa Hulshorst. It is a project by Lyongo from 2004, together with Hans Ruijssenaars. And one of our stories from the 25-year series.

The open landscape that borders the villa is not immediately visible from the street. The elongated facade can be read on this side as a closed volume with a thatched roof. The thatched roof matches the regional building materials such as reed, brick and wood. On the other side, the facade opens in a three-dimensional way with glass fronts, wooden trusses and a colonnade as a support for the overhanging aluminum roof. This roof functions as a sun visor and forms a continuous veranda.

First villa

Lyongo: “I wanted to share this project because it was the first project during my time working with Hans Ruijssenaars, where he considered me the co-architect. We were accustomed to work out his designs but here it was a coproduction. It was an honor to work together with Hans on his first villa that had been realized during a career – at that time – of more than 40 years.”

Harmony

On the lower floor where the bedrooms are the interior is more intimate and spaces are smaller. The living area of the house is located on the first, raised floor. There the space is very open and the inside and outside flow into each other. The raised floor gives residents a beautiful view of the landscape.

This project reflects the shared passion of the clients and the architect, who together created a unique villa that is in perfect harmony with its surroundings.
