New premiere of our documentary Kombiná: January 23, 2025 in Amsterdam! The documentary will premiere at the prestigious Pathé de Munt in the heart of Amsterdam. This iconic cinema location is the perfect place for an in-depth look at the theme of contemporary Caribbean architecture.
The choice of Amsterdam as the premiere location is no coincidence. As home to the Social Design Foundation and lyongo architecture, the city is not only a practical choice, but also a substantive one. The themes in the documentary – such as sustainability, heritage, social inclusion, climate and local culture – are directly connected to the urban dynamics and diversity of Amsterdam.
About the documentary
The term “contemporary Caribbean music” immediately conjures up images and sounds. But what does “contemporary Caribbean architecture” look like? And how do influences from migration and a multicultural population play a role in this? Interesting questions for a diverse city like Amsterdam.
In Kombiná, architect Lyongo Juliana takes the viewer on a journey through his work from the past 25 years. From projects on Curaçao and Bonaire to the windward islands of St. Maarten and Saba. Together with young designers, residents and students, Lyongo explores the essence of architecture that reflects not only the environment, but also the community. What is the impact of themes such as sustainability, heritage and inclusion on his designs? The documentary challenges the viewer to think for themselves: is there such a thing as contemporary Caribbean architecture?
The film, directed by Pim Gelevert, previously had a successful premiere during the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam, where a sold-out audience was taken along in Lyongo’s unique vision. Now Amsterdam gets the honor, after which premieres on St. Maarten and Saba will follow.
Don’t miss this special evening! Order your tickets now and discover the world of contemporary Caribbean architecture like you’ve never seen it before.
