House Helenastraat

This is a heritage project on Helenastraat where we transformed a former workers’ home into a modern, functional residence.

Although the house lacked official monumental status, the project was approached with the same care and respect as any heritage site. All monuments are carriers of stories, no matter their size. Our approach was to preserve the soul of the building and its historical values, while creating a contemporary home.

Preserving the history

In 2011, we created the renovation plans and designed the extension with a singular mission: to make the house habitable once again while preserving its unique character.

The old building had fallen into disrepair and was in desperate need of renovation. Very little is known about the house’s history. The only clues to its past were three indoor chimneys, suggesting that the building may have once been three separate workers’ homes. Beyond this, the building offered no clear indication of its former functions or residents.

Bridging two neighborhoods

The renovated building comprises 70 square meters with two bedrooms. A second volume of 35 square meters was added and constructed in the garden. The design draws inspiration from the surrounding environment. The choice of a zinc roof instead of traditional roof tiles reflects the area’s character.

Nieuw Nederland is a working-class district where wooden houses with distinctive corrugated metal roofs are prominent. In stark contrast, just across the plot stands a luxurious city villa. This design bridges both worlds, connecting the neighborhood’s varied architectural identities.

The resulting home is both functional and deeply respectful of its context, offering a beautiful balance between preservation and innovation.
