Some first thoughts

Last weekend an interesting appeared in Het Parool about the ‘Nationaal Slavernij Museum’ in Amsterdam and its great example; the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington.

The municipality of Amsterdam is busy with plans for the design, programming and location. In 2023 a lot of input is being collected from people from throughout the Dutch Kingdom and beyond. Lyongo shares his first thoughts about the museum, which he wrote down years ago. But remarkably enough, many of his views correspond with the article from Het Parool…

My museum
I don’t want a slavery museum, because that limits my past in the same way that being a slave limited my ancestors’ humanity to a means of production.
My ancestors were full-fledged people who loved, had ideals and dreamed of freedom.
I want an emancipation museum where you can experience the circumstances under which my ancestors created an existence, despite being enslaved.
I want an emancipation museum to show how my ancestors emancipated themselves from oppression.
I want an emancipation museum where you can see that emancipation is a process that never ends and is not reserved for the black woman or black man.

I want an emancipation museum in which everyone can see where we come from, black, white, red and yellow, where we are now and where we want to go.

Mijn museum
Ik wil geen slavernijmuseum, want dat beperkt mijn verleden op de zelfde wijze als het slaaf zijn, het mens zijn van mijn voorouders beperkte tot een productiemiddel.
Mijn voorouders waren volwaardige mensen die liefhadden, idealen hadden en van vrijheid droomden.
Ik wil een emancipatie museum waar je kan ervaren onder welke omstandigheden mijn voorouders een bestaan gecreëerd hebben, ondanks dat ze tot slaaf gemaakt waren.
Ik wil een emancipatie museum om te laten zien hoe mijn voorouders zich vanuit de onderdrukking geemancipeerd hebben.
Ik wil een emancipatie museum waar je kan zien dat de emancipatie een proces is dat nooit ophoud en niet is voortbehouden aan de zwarte vrouw of zwarte man.
Ik wil een emancipatie museum waarin iedereen kan zien waar we vandaan komen, zwart, wit, rood en geel, waar we nu zijn en waar we naar toe willen gaan.
